Showing all will be safe within the Catholic community
SAN ANTONIO • The archdiocese is currently observing “Safe Church, Safe Child and Youth Days,” from Oct. 9 to 22, focusing on the protection of children and youth.
During this time 60 parishes and more than two dozen schools within the archdiocese are educating children and youth on abuse prevention.
The event commenced with a special 10 a.m. Mass celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Patrick J. Zurek at San Fernando Cathedral Oct. 9.

Bishop Zurek recounted how in June 2002, the U.S. bishops approved, in their Dallas meeting, the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
“The charter clearly called for the removal from the priesthood for any cleric who was found to have abused a minor. But it also called for a commitment on the part of the bishops to create a safe environment in all of our parishes and institutions of a respective diocese,” said the bishop. “Since that time all dioceses have established offices for this purpose and programs have been initiated to train all personnel, paid or volunteer, in regard to maintaining a safe environment for our children.”

Bishop Zurek expressed his regret that such abuse has occurred in the church. “I am so sorry that it has occurred. We all are. I wish I could un-do this, but obviously, that is not possible. So we continue to work to develop a safe environment. We continue to meet with victims and their families. We have offered our assistance in counseling to help bring healing to them. We pray with them.”
The auxiliary bishop explained that the church is about healing and reconciliation. “Many do not see this wonderful light of Christ that is truly present in the church,” he said.
Petitions at the liturgy offered prayers for children and families.
“Children are a precious gift from God. The church must always be a safe harbor where children can be children, surrounded by God’s love,” stated Archbishop José H. Gomez regarding this special initiative. “Our Office of Victim Assistance, with the cooperation of our pastors, principals and parents, has implemented an unprecedented, comprehensive program of training for children, parents and all those in ministry who have regular contact with children.”

The archdiocese uses the “Child Lures” and “Yello Dyno” programs as the basis of its training process for adults and children. These programs are accepted as among the most effective age-appropriate courses and are used in public schools and dioceses throughout the country.
The archdiocese also works closely with Healthy Families of San Antonio, Alamo Children’s Advocacy Center and the San Antonio Rape Crisis Center in their efforts.
