Alum honors memory of Brother Ed Schiermeier, SM, with scholarship funds for students

SAN ANTONIO • In 1963, Brother Edmund A. Schiermeier, SM, began a 22-year assignment at Central Catholic High School, where his hard work and enthusiasm was appreciated by faculty, students and parents, alike.
So much so that he was affectionately called “Brother Central.”
One of those students (and his wife) who has long since graduated and who wishes to remain anonymous has now created a scholarship in honor of Brother Ed.
He considers Brother Ed and Brother Harry Cornell, SM, ’58 (a Central Catholic faculty member) to be his mentors and role models.
“While Brother Ed did not teach in the classroom, he was very involved with and much loved by the students,” says the scholarship donor.

As a Working Brother with the Society of Mary (Marianists), Brother Ed handled maintenance and remodeling at CCHS.
He was also very active in student activities and sports.
Brother Ed was everywhere: offering support on the sidelines of sports events, driving the bus, chaperoning dances and cheering the loudest in the bleachers. And, he wasn’t beyond giving advice to the referees.
“He exemplified school pride and spirit,” says the donor. “He was a very hard worker behind the scenes. He was very humble and unselfish. He had a positive attitude. He was a contributor. All of the students liked and respected him.”

The Brother Ed Schiermeier, SM, Scholarship will be awarded to any existing student (not an incoming freshman) who:
• Participates in football, basketball or baseball
• Maintains at least a C average
• Demonstrates the “Brother Ed Schiermeier qualities” which include working hard, exemplifying solid character and getting the maximum potential out of himself.
“I hope the student who is awarded the Brother Ed Schiermeier, SM, Scholarship has the same great experience at Central Catholic that I did. My four years gave me a solid foundation based on Marianist values and strong lasting friendships,” says the donor.
Brother Ed was born July 12, 1939, in Florissant, Mo., to Henry and Bernandine Schiermeier. He was one of four boys and three girls who grew up on a farm just north of St. Louis. He earned a bachelor of science degree in Philosophy from St. Mary’s University in 1959.
Brother Ed professed first vows on Sept. 8, 1956, and professed final vows on Aug. 22, 1961.
He considered his 1981 silver jubilee celebration one of the highlights of his life. He died in service on Aug. 25, 2002, in the 65th year of his life and the 46th year of his religious profession.
