In 1999 after hearing so many people talk about the San Antonio Spurs, and seeing “Go, Spurs, Go” all over the city, the community of Discalced Carmelite nuns decided to learn more about who they were and why the city was so proud of them.
So, the nuns decided to watch a game on TV, as the team played to gain the NBA championship that year.
From that day on, the sisters became great fans of these talented men. For years this community has prayed for them, asking God’s blessing on the good example of sportsmanship and moral values they offer to our city, and to especially our youth, while also praying that God sustain them in their resolve to remain such.
On March 30, Bruce Bowen came to meet this community of nuns. After a wonderful visit, the nuns asked that he accompany them to where they have a basketball net, to show them where they must stand if they make a “free throw.” He gladly did so, and then posed with them for a photo.

They are praying that God grant the best for them, and for those who enjoy this sport. It would be a tremendous joy if the Spurs were to win the championship again this year.
Yet, for all the good they do and are, the Spurs are nothing less than champions no matter what the scores on the board may say, and the nuns are most grateful to have met one of them. Thank you, Bruce Bowen, and “Go, Spurs, Go!” |
